Brunswick St is experiencing a much-needed facelift and leading the charge is new venue Naked for Satan.
The concept borrows from the north of Spain, where pintxos are spread out on the bar, you pick what you want and a fat old Spanish bartender with the mind of a Jedi tracks what you eat and charges you accordingly. Difference here is, you keep the toothpicks that accompany your bite size morsels and the bartender tallies them for payment when you’re done. At just $2 a pop, these little pintxos are tasty baguette based mouthfuls that feature a rotating line up of toppings. Jamon, tortilla and all the classic Spanish flavours are up for grabs.
There is a mainstream beer selection, with an in house beer on tap. Wines from around the world with a Spanish focus ring it at very reasonable prices. And having ignored the death of flavoured vodka in every other decent drinking establishment, a lavish display of in-house vodka adorns the back bar and features heavily in the cocktail list.
The fit-out here is really what makes it, with a column still being the first thing to greet you upon entry. It’s rumoured that a crazy old Russian janitor used to make vodka in the basement of the former premises and did so in the nude due to the heat. So as an ode to this crazy old man, they’ve erected his still and put part of his name on the front door. It makes for a good story and a solid décor choice.
