Bill Cunningham New York

The Sartorialist is great. A huge profile and an undeniable eye for good fashion. But don't be mistaken, he didn't come up with that instantaneous, people on the street, natural fashion shooting thing all by himself. The original sartorialist is a man by the name of Bill Cunningham. He's been shooting for the New York Times since before your parents were born and his eye for fashion is second to none. He's an unusual character, having lived by himself all his life, riding the same bicycle through the streets and denouncing any sense of fashion himself, wearing the same utilitarian jacket everyday.  If it rains, he grabs a disposable $2 poncho and tapes it up to get multiple uses out of it. And most famously he'll refuse to raise his camera at runway shows, offering a silent but scathing denial of his belief in some of the world's biggest fashion names. Somehow, filmmaker Richard Press convinced Cunningham to allow him access into his life to discover what makes this life long recluse tick. He's also interviewed the biggest names in Manhattan fashion to get the inside story on the man that gave little to nothing away about his life. Anna Wintour, Brooke Astor and David Rockefeller all go on record to reveal the mystery behind Cunningham. Gaining awards at a host of this year's festivals, this is an amazing doco if you've got any interest in fashion or photography. But it's an inspirational story about a guy who does amazing things in the most humble of ways. An amazing life that we're all the better for having documented for all of us to see. The Boatbuilder’s Yard

The guys from Riverland, that perfectly positioned indoor/outdoor bar down by the river that sells the awesome snags have hitched their venue concept onto a barge and pushed it down the Yarra just a little bit.The Boatbuilder's Yard is another project from the same guys that also bought you the Wye River General Store down on the Great Ocean Road. The concepts are all very similar, having Six Degrees architects make the most of their natural assets, in this case the sun and the water. It's a huge venue, holding up to 1400 people at capacity and encouraging a large crowd to come at any time from 7am to 1am. The core of the clientele is sure to be corporate owing to it's Docklands/Exhibition Centre proximity, but it's a notch above the service and style you can expect at PonyFish Island just up the river. The Big Snags will be roasting on the BBQ all day long, with a solid menu on offer from breakfast to dinner. Beer, cider and wine are all pretty mainstream, but you're really only there to wet the whistle on a hot day, so don't get too upset.Good summer hotspot and the perfect place to take out of town visitors to show off our pristine urban river system. Banging around on the big ship Polly Woodside is a massive bonus for the nautical fiends amongst you.The Boatbuilder's YardShed 4, 2a Clarendon St, South WharfOpen 7 Days, 7am til LateDetails: The Boatbuilders Yard

Awesome Foundation

I was recently introduced to the Awesome Foundation. I immediately dismissed it as a clever pyramid scheme with a great name. BUT, it turns out that this is above board, revolutionary, motivational, entrepreneurial brilliance that is more than worthy of it's name. The initial snag is that a group of people want to give you a $1000 in cash for submitting a great idea. And they do it every month. No questions asked, no returns to deliver, no reports to compile, no red tape to drown in. But how?Crowd sourcing $100 from 10 members that are entrepreneurs just looking to give back and foster great ideas in the community, they meet once a month, discuss their favourite submissions then hand over a cool grand in the hand to one lucky person. There are chapters popping up all over the world, but Melbourne is strong and delivering some money for some solid ideas. Recent recipients have included The Rooftop Honey Project, that crazy macaroon covered Mini that was doing the rounds and a host more ideas that innovate, inspire, help or amaze. You've got until 25th September to get your ideas in for this month's round. If you miss it, relax, there is always next month. The submission process couldn't be easier, just hit the foundation's site and tell them briefly about your project.Think big, grab a grand, do something awesome. Pretty easy. The Awesome FoundationMelbourne ChapterAwarding every last Tuesday of the MonthDetails and Submissions: Awesome Foundation

Ksubi Chapel Street

Ksubi's presence went a little un-noticed in Melbourne with their old store only catering to the Real Housewives of Armadale County on High St, with an awesome store built from cardboard but in effective hipster Siberia. So, this week they crawl even further out of that hobbit hole with the opening of a store on Chapel St, at 559 to be exact. It's called The End Of The Moon. It joins the recently opened White Bored store in the refurbed Melbourne Centrale. All the staples are there with the addition of some stuff out of the Kustom collection to get your unique slant on.Ksubi - The End Of The Moon559 Chapel St, South YarraOpen 7 DaysDetails: Ksubi

The Bottom End

If you've been to Sydney lately, chances are your mates told you to hit The Flinders, or The Norfolk, or The Abecrombie. The basic vibe for those that haven't been is to take neglected, run down and terrible pubs, give them a lick of paint, put on some good food, staff them with hipsters and watch the good times roll. This methodology has just been applied to a rubbish Irish pub at the bottom end of Lt Collins St in the city. Self described as a hybrid venue encapsulating 'PUB DISCO DINER' you'd be hard pressed to describe it better or more succinctly.American grub on the rotation from the kitchen with a good dash of quality covered in kitsch helps to bolster the offering. The drinks offering is pretty much what you'd expect from a pub, Stella and the parochial mainstays on the taps, but it fails to differentiate and blow minds. It'd be good to see some solid Victorian microbrews, but again, it's a pub so stop being a snob. Wine is cheekily labeled 'cheap', 'reasonable' and 'good'. All are reasonably priced and not mind blowing, but did I mention yet that it was a pub?The decor is truly inspired and a genius re-interpretation of it's former glory. A notch above dive bar, it'll take a while to wear in, for now it's fresh and inviting. As for the entertainment, you know that main man Michael Delaney is going to have killer DJs spinning tunes to all hours, the 24 hour licence might not get a full work out, but be assured they'll give it a good push. You might have to endure that critical sub-genre of glam-hispters for a while, but this place is going to settle into a rhythm and be a go to for every occassion where food, drink and fun is called for.The Bottom End579 little Collins St, CityWed-Sun 4pm - til you get tiredDetails: Facebook

Guinness Live Thursdays

As if St.Patrick’s Day wasn’t enough of a marathon in itself, requiring at least a yearto get over, there is a new day on the Irish (and therefore International)calendar in which we must give thanks for drinking Guinness, by drinkingGuinness. Makes sense, more sense than ‘celebrating’ St. Patricks day anyway. The day inquestion is in fact Arthur’s Day. The day in which old Arthur Guinness signed a9000 year lease on the St. James gate brewery in Dub-Town (Dublin). Aspart of these celebrations, Guinness has decided to share the love with aninternational music contest that will culminate in an all outfestival in Dublin. Beatrix

Beatrix makes us happy. And here’s why:Toasted ciabatta: good. Warm, juicy, finger-lickin’ flavourful fillings: good. Well-made Allpress coffee offerings: good. Desserts to die for: obviously, very good.We stumbled upon this place a few weeks back, and were at first not convinced by the very short menu consisting of sandwich or, well, sandwich. But how wrong we were. Blame our upbringing. Victims of incessant choice we thought we needed a plethora of egg, avocado and corn fritter dishes to make our brunch time tick. Apparently, this is not the case, as this Queensberry Street front parlour so confidently proves.Large or small, meat or veggie. It’s that simple. On our first visit – a Vietnamese bahn mi (pulled pork, coriander and spicy Asian salad) and lemony bortolli beans and other yummy, creamy stuff were on the board. The meat ciabatta was a no-brainer – packed with flavour and just right. The veggie one was surprisingly good too – coming from a bean-sceptic.Today, we feasted on pot-roasted lamb shoulder with a spicy harissa carrot salad, mint and labne, and a basil-marinated eggplant ciabatta with roasted ricotta and rocket.Admittedly, the veggie choice didn’t hit the mark as it has in the past – but at $8.50 for a small and $10.50 for a large serving, it is tasty, filling and lovingly homemade – well worth it. The lamb ($10.50/$13.50) was fab. There is a great sense of care with every dish delivered and an obvious passion here – especially when it comes to desserts.Heaps of decadent splurge options. All are homemade with a good selection of cakes, brownies and cookies (and lamingtons). My favourite is the cabinet of daily-changing cheesecakes. Last visit it was lemon zest and this visit was banana cheesecake. But I did a double take when I noticed the raspberry fool meringue roulade for a very reasonable $7.50. This, my friends, is the holy grail in a mini-fridge. It is as God would have intended. The flavour was astounding and I wonder why I have not encountered something of its like before.Oh. My. God. So to sum up, and to do the hardworking lady in the kitchen justice, there is also granola, a mushroom toastie and grilled Otway Ranges bacon and fried egg rolls, so there is actually more of a choice than we at first claimed. But, to be honest, once you’ve had a Beatrix ciabatta that’s all you can think about.Beatrix 688 Queensberry St North Melbourne, 3051Ph. (03) 9090 7301Details: BeatrixBy Nic Crilly Hargrave
