Ksubi Buy Or Die

Back when Ksubi was spelt with a T and the jeans were made by a bunch of bros hitting normal jeans with sandpaper and grinders and inventing that pre-worn look, the brand was A-Grade groundbreaking stuff. In fact, in the early days they even used to hand write prose on the inside of their jeans so when you got the third base with your lady and the pants came off, you could serenade her with the inspirational text that graced the inside leg of your ol' Tsubi's.Gone are the days of the highly custom buzz jeans that were the original Tsubi. But they're still fresh and tight. The point of this whole story is....well...we've been rocking them for a long time and still reckon they've got a place in the wardrobe, even if you don't live anywhere near Bondi. And for three days, you can get down to their sale and pick up some cheap stuff that didn't sell so well last season, but is still awesome. Jeans, T's, sweats, sunnies, whatever else they sell now days.KSUBI BUY OR DIE SALEOak off Chapel, 33 Simmons St, South YarraFriday 22nd - Sunday 24th OctoberDetails: Ksubi Melbourne Facebook

The Waiting Room

The Waiting Room by Neil Perry opens today (13th October). Just round the corner from the successful Rockpool operation in Crown Casino, this bar concept is set to bring a much needed touch of class to the Crown complex. You won't find any giant daiquiris with penis straws down here. The concept has been developed by some the country's finest bartenders and features a menu that evolves with the day. Start out with brunch cocktails to cure hangovers, progress on to some beer cocktails for getting through the hot days and move on to some more serious classic drinks with some killer molecular twists. Check out the Corn and Oil, using Falernum Syrup and popcorn washed rum. Or the strange but enticing 'Burnt Toast', a Honey, Agave and citrus libation mixed with burnt toast infused Tequila. Be sure to grab a Lord Nelson Three Sheets Pale Ale, reportedly the first time the beer has been available outside the Lord Nelson hotel in Sydney. The food menu too changes through the day, serving brunch right up to midnight munchies. Small bites and light dinner designed to match up perfectly to the drinks. Naked For Satan

Photo: Josie Withers via broadsheet.com.auBrunswick St is experiencing a much-needed facelift and leading the charge is new venue Naked for Satan. The concept borrows from the north of Spain, where pintxos are spread out on the bar, you pick what you want and a fat old Spanish bartender with the mind of a Jedi tracks what you eat and charges you accordingly. Difference here is, you keep the toothpicks that accompany your bite size morsels and the bartender tallies them for payment when you’re done. At just $2 a pop, these little pintxos are tasty baguette based mouthfuls that feature a rotating line up of toppings. Jamon, tortilla and all the classic Spanish flavours are up for grabs. There is a mainstream beer selection, with an in house beer on tap. Wines from around the world with a Spanish focus ring it at very reasonable prices. And having ignored the death of flavoured vodka in every other decent drinking establishment, a lavish display of in-house vodka adorns the back bar and features heavily in the cocktail list. The fit-out here is really what makes it, with a column still being the first thing to greet you upon entry. It’s rumoured that a crazy old Russian janitor used to make vodka in the basement of the former premises and did so in the nude due to the heat. So as an ode to this crazy old man, they’ve erected his still and put part of his name on the front door. It makes for a good story and a solid décor choice. 285 Brunswick St, Fitzroy MapOpen 7 Days til late 9416 2238Details: Naked for Satan

I’m Still Here

Today's review is the maiden post for our new film and literature reviewer Jen Wake. This post is exactly why we've taken her on, dry and darkly funny with more reviewing talent than the illicit love child of David and Margaret. I’m Still Here is hilariously funny, brilliant, satirical, clever and full of lines you’ll want to memorise and recite to your mates. It will make you a better person. Well, not better perhaps but definitely more entertained. JP performs his role with the true skill of an actor who studies his subject with passion and intensity. He, his extravagant hair, a naked-more-often-than-most friend, Casey Affleck and his camera cruise around LA and NY trying to break into the world of rap. The fact that it’s a hoax, (and I find it hard to believe anyone can see the film and not realise this) is irrelevant to the greatness of the film, it only speaks of their dedication to the cause. Affleck produces a film that ticks all the boxes. I really hope Hollywood embraces this film in a friendly fashion. It’s cutting, yes, but not caustic. Not born of spite but perhaps, frustration? Whatever the initial catalysts, this film is so entirely necessary I can’t remember the world before it. Hyperbole aside. Watch it. Brilliant cameos from Hollywood giants make you realise the actual warmth of a genuine community behind the often shallow and ridiculous nature of fame. Not for the weak hearted, this film does contain moments of extreme embarrassment. Which is only further testament to the acting and the fact that it feels so very real. Need I say more really?     This is my first time as a guest on Daily Melbourne, first of many. Films and books are my wheelhouse. You and I could develop a special thing here, but it should be known I have tendency to exaggerate both my admiration and disgust, a bit of a hindrance for a reviewer you might think? However I think you’ll come to find over time that my taste is flawless. Bye for now. Now screening at Cinema Nova, 380 Lygon St, Carlton
