Falls Festival 2011

If you were planning on heading to Falls Festival this year in Lorne, Victoria then good for you. Presume you've already got your ticket there then buddy. 'Cause it's sold out.BUT, there is the far more desirable option of heading across that bit of sea down the bottom and checking out the whole show down in Tas-mania and attending what is arguably the most beautiful setting of any festival, anywhere in the world. Tickets are still available for the Marion Bay show and there is no better way we can think of to ring in the new year.Music Talents come in the form Alpine, The Kooks,  Arctic Monkeys, Crystal Castles, Lanie Lane, CSS, DJ Yoda, Kimbra, the list goes on, but in a good way, a really good way. And as always with the Falls, the focus isn't squarely on music. Arts get a good run with some comedy greats like Josh Thomas, Arj Barker and Young MC (hard to know where to categorise this if he tries to reprise 'Bust A Move').Falls Festival 2011Lorne, VIC (sold out) and Marion Bay, TAS29th Dec - 1st JanTickets: Falls Festival

Tokyo Bike

We've seen a host of ready made, entry level bikes flood the scene in the last couple of years. Most have been highly customisable and for the most part, poor quality. So the opening of Tokyo bike could be considered as just another option to the entry level bike scene. It is however, just a little bit more than that. Beginning in Tokyo almost 10 years ago, they now boast stores in Berlin, Singapore and Sydney with Melbourne being the latest addition. The bikes are of a good quality considering the circa $700 price bracket, certainly the whole package is set to get you a lot further than most of it's counterparts. It's the Japanese aesthetic though that sets them apart most. Clean and subtle with great geometry for guys and girls in colours that don't resemble the ensemble of the rainbow. The store too speaks volumes to this aesthetic, clean, sparse and inviting, it's location in Collingwood is also well mapped out. The Japanese staff are attentive and helpful, but most importantly inviting. Stroll in have a chat and the chances are you'll be rolling out with at least a new light or lock, if not a fresh looking ride. The accessories line up is good, with usual suspects Knog on the frontline, but some great Japanese imports in the form of locks and racks from Wald.Tokyo Bike5 Peel St, CollingwoodClosed TuesdaysDetails: Tokyo Bike Melbourne

The Little Mule Company

It seemed for a while there the whole custom fixed gear buy online, bespoke, but not really bespoke scene was getting a new entrant every day. This scene was producing progressively cheaper and more rubbish bikes by the day too. So it’s a wonder it took this long for someone to go the other way. Welcome Little Mule. The ability to see your bike and ride it before you purchase it is a bit of a coup in this modern cycling world. Furthermore, great coffees paired up with breakfast and lunch options, you’ve got the makings of the pot of gold at the end of the hipster rainbow. And building a bike here has limitless options and no-one is going to judge your set-up. It’s a bit like cruising the menu in a Michelin star restaurant, but having the option to order vegemite toast if that’s your flavour. You get an unbranded rig with top end parts that isn’t going to fall apart, looks bad arse and not the same as the rest of your bike gang. Roll down for a coffee and whet your appetite for rad bikes and delicious food. Little Mule 19 Somerset Place, City Map Details: Little Mule*P.S. They serve killer coffee, check the Epicure in today's The Age for a full run down. *P.P.S. We ran this story before we knew they were going to.

Melbourne Design Market

We all love a good market, but often it's draining to filter through all the gypsies  and tie dyed original t-shirts. Thankfully, The Melbourne Design Market pools together the best of design to bring you a market guaranteed to be gypsy free. And it's on again tomorrow. The market is cleverly held in the undercover carpark at Fed Square, so it's a rain, hail or shine setup. And being winter, it's more than likely to be rain. In order to keep the standard of stall holders at a premium level, the market is only held twice a year. So snatch your chance before its gone again. Some of our favourite unique pieces from Melbourne upstarts (start-ups) will be on display. Get down to check out the fresh range of JellyBean bikes or pick yourself up one of the awesome Lego USB numbers from Zip-Zip. The Melbourne Design Market, July 1110am - 5pm, Level 3, Federation Square carpark MapDetails: Melbourne Design Market

Monster Sale

American Apparel, Vans and a whole host more skate and street brands will be going on sale in Moorabbin. There is a map at the bottom if this conjures up images of going half to way to Sydney for some cheap sneaks and T's. It starts today and ends on Sunday, get out there quick. As with all 'Monster' sales, the hot tip is to get out there today or tomorrow or find yourself rummaging through a bunch of junk in XXS or XXXL and buying a dodgy cap just to make the trip seem worthwhile. AHHHHH, Monsters.Moorabbin Town Hall, Cnr Nepean Hwy and South Road MapDetails: Click the Flyer

Melbourne Bike Share

In the footsteps of great cities such as Paris, Melbourne is jumping on the bike share band wagon. Over the coming weeks, you'll notice stations go up all over town holding a stock of blue bikes. The scheme is pretty easy to use, grab a yearly subscription for just $50 or super cheap single rides from $2.50.We went for a burn around on one of these cruisers and were suitably impressed. Much more stable and comfortable than their original Parisian counterparts. Fat wheels have no doubt been implemented to keep the tram track menace at bay for tourists and locals alike. It's only a matter of time before Melbourne gets it's own bandit crew of rogue hispters creating an extreme riding club. See Parisian examples here. Just remember when you trash a bike, you're trashing everyone's bike! (So, don't do it yeah).Details: Melbourne Bike Share

Jelly Bean Bikes

Fixies have been gaining popularity for quite some time. The definitive entry of this subculture into the mainstream is surely heralded by the arrival of JELLY BEAN BIKES.For the small fee of $599 you can pick yourself up a fixed or freewheel rig in any one of the plethora of colour permutations that are available. A choice of 6 frame colours, 4 wheel colours and a choice on everything else, there is little chance you’ll be sporting the same combo as Mary Jane up the street from you.Easy to ride and maintain, these bikes are solid for the limited amount of cash you have to fork out and you’ll be a styler profiler next time you roll down to the café to meet the crew. The concept has been developed by a couple of local designers, who scoured the globe to find sturdy parts that come in a selection of colours. Being a local brand also means that you can get free pick up and they offer open house sessions to go down and try before you buy. Details: Jelly Bean Bikes

Bar Fred

Bar Fred is situated on Nicholson St, up to the top end, where you would only venture if you lived there. But that's only because you didn't know Bar Fred was up there. This place pumps out some stellar $5 pizzas. The price to quality ratio is off the charts, sure its not the BEST pizza going round, but for a cheeky fiver, it's awesome. Then there is the beer list. Stocking up on a bunch of local microbrews and obscure imports, this is up there with the towns best. Being winter, it's time to get into the dark ales, try Red Hill's Scotch Ale for a tasty introduction to the 'dark side'.The interior kind of looks like an abandoned Italian family restaurant, but the vintage furniture coupled with the majority of the inhabitants being fresh hipsters make this is a cosy and comfortable space. That is if you can actually get a table, it's busy, cause it's good. Did we mention $5 pizzas?797 Nicholson St, North CarltonMon-Fri, 5:30pm-12:30amDetails: Map
