Kubik Melbourne

There is a lot of activity surrounding Melbourne Music Week, set to launch this Friday. By far the most visually stunning is set to be the installation of KUBIK at Birrarung Marr. Having travelled throughout Europe for the last couple of years, this architectural installation features a structure built primarily from poly water tanks. The tanks are filled with lights that pulse and change colour in time with the music. Some of Europe's hardest hallucinogenics combined with this light show surely set some of Berlin's finest club goers to another dimension in recent times. The line up inside the venue can be seen here. The opening party features massive sets by Cut Copy and Midnight Juggernauts with support from Worlds End Press. There is an eclectic line up across the festival, with something for everyone to experience this revolutionary space. During the day, South Melbourne patisserie Chez Dre will be hosting a cafe. Dolling out coffee and some premium macaroons in a perfect setting down at the Marr. KUBIK Melbourne Details: Melbourne Music Week

Beatrix

Beatrix makes us happy. And here’s why:Toasted ciabatta: good. Warm, juicy, finger-lickin’ flavourful fillings: good. Well-made Allpress coffee offerings: good. Desserts to die for: obviously, very good.We stumbled upon this place a few weeks back, and were at first not convinced by the very short menu consisting of sandwich or, well, sandwich. But how wrong we were. Blame our upbringing. Victims of incessant choice we thought we needed a plethora of egg, avocado and corn fritter dishes to make our brunch time tick. Apparently, this is not the case, as this Queensberry Street front parlour so confidently proves.Large or small, meat or veggie. It’s that simple. On our first visit – a Vietnamese bahn mi (pulled pork, coriander and spicy Asian salad) and lemony bortolli beans and other yummy, creamy stuff were on the board. The meat ciabatta was a no-brainer – packed with flavour and just right. The veggie one was surprisingly good too – coming from a bean-sceptic.Today, we feasted on pot-roasted lamb shoulder with a spicy harissa carrot salad, mint and labne, and a basil-marinated eggplant ciabatta with roasted ricotta and rocket.Admittedly, the veggie choice didn’t hit the mark as it has in the past – but at $8.50 for a small and $10.50 for a large serving, it is tasty, filling and lovingly homemade – well worth it. The lamb ($10.50/$13.50) was fab. There is a great sense of care with every dish delivered and an obvious passion here – especially when it comes to desserts.Heaps of decadent splurge options. All are homemade with a good selection of cakes, brownies and cookies (and lamingtons). My favourite is the cabinet of daily-changing cheesecakes. Last visit it was lemon zest and this visit was banana cheesecake. But I did a double take when I noticed the raspberry fool meringue roulade for a very reasonable $7.50. This, my friends, is the holy grail in a mini-fridge. It is as God would have intended. The flavour was astounding and I wonder why I have not encountered something of its like before.Oh. My. God. So to sum up, and to do the hardworking lady in the kitchen justice, there is also granola, a mushroom toastie and grilled Otway Ranges bacon and fried egg rolls, so there is actually more of a choice than we at first claimed. But, to be honest, once you’ve had a Beatrix ciabatta that’s all you can think about.Beatrix 688 Queensberry St North Melbourne, 3051Ph. (03) 9090 7301Details: BeatrixBy Nic Crilly Hargrave

Pillar Of Salt

Following in the families' footsteps is a tradition that unfortunately doesn’t occur as often as it should these days. But for two young brothers, the decision was easy. After securing a site right next to the ever popular Royal Saxon, they set about putting together a café to fit into the surrounding environment. With the help of TECHNE architects, the result is a perfect setting combining the indoor and outdoor spaces and making it feel roomier than its modest floor space. With massive windows opening onto the street and an awning that retracts to take in the sun all day long. Church St has been crying out for some good café action ever since Pearl Café went to shit and starting serving Vittoria Coffee. The testament to this has to be these guys selling out of food completely on their first day of trade. Food is simply, but delicious. A strong ‘smash and grab’ selection of hearty baguettes is on offer with some more delicate meals available if you’re eating in. Grab a coffee, you’re in safe hands with good baristas pumping out the 5 senses blends through a shiny new Synesso machine. Look forward to big things and great times from this café with weekend trade expected to get a liquor license and get the party started (as much as it can be in a café anyway). The Little Mule Company

It seemed for a while there the whole custom fixed gear buy online, bespoke, but not really bespoke scene was getting a new entrant every day. This scene was producing progressively cheaper and more rubbish bikes by the day too. So it’s a wonder it took this long for someone to go the other way. Welcome Little Mule. The ability to see your bike and ride it before you purchase it is a bit of a coup in this modern cycling world. Furthermore, great coffees paired up with breakfast and lunch options, you’ve got the makings of the pot of gold at the end of the hipster rainbow. And building a bike here has limitless options and no-one is going to judge your set-up. It’s a bit like cruising the menu in a Michelin star restaurant, but having the option to order vegemite toast if that’s your flavour. You get an unbranded rig with top end parts that isn’t going to fall apart, looks bad arse and not the same as the rest of your bike gang. Roll down for a coffee and whet your appetite for rad bikes and delicious food. Little Mule 19 Somerset Place, City Map Details: Little Mule*P.S. They serve killer coffee, check the Epicure in today's The Age for a full run down. *P.P.S. We ran this story before we knew they were going to.

Il Fornaio

So, the St. Ali behemoth is at again. This time, they've taken over Il Fornaio on Acland St in St. Kilda. Sure, they put some great coffee on and maintained the great minimalist interior. But then they had to go and get the best pastry chef in the country to (wo)man the ovens. Phillipa Sibley was Chef of the Year and an absolute pastry Jedi. The food line up here is exceptional, any time of day, have in or take away. But the specially designed dessert bar menu matched to premium St. Ali grind is something to behold. If you don't live anywhere near St. Kilda, this is certainly one of those destination cafes, worth jumping a tram or the car to get to. The Snickers cake is the bomb, mouth orgasms abound!2 Acland St, St. Kilda MapDetails: Il Fornaio
