Melbourne’s Cultural Fringe

Every Wednesday evening in Melbourne’s inner city suburbs, a group gathers to play the ukulele. Titled the Melbourne Ukulele Kollective, and outnumbered by beginners, the group is united through a passion for the instrument. Having performed at Federation Square and the Port Fairy Folk Festival, it might not be long ‘til you can claim you knew this group before they went commercial. If you’ve been watching the new TV program Fringe Lane, you’ll know what I’m on about. In only the show’s second week on air, Fringe Lane has featured segments on Melbourne’s Ukulele Kollective, St. Kilda’s Veg Out Community Garden, West Footscray’s Women’s Circus, and other quirky attributes of this city.Fringe Lane focuses on Melbourne’s art, fashion, food and music culture. Hosted by four young women, the show presents stories on emerging and undiscovered pastimes, enterprises and events that slip under the mainstream media radar. ‘We just felt there was no room on Australian television for something a bit different, a little left-of-centre, so this is our way of trying to change that’, says Fringe Lane Producer, Tahlia Azaria. Better yet, Fringe Lane is associated with Yourthworx Productions, enabling at-risk minors to get involved in the show’s production. Watch Fringe Lane, and you’ll be supporting Melbourne youths gain skills in editing, and operating cameras, audio and lights for the program. Carbon

The crew from Acclaim Magazine have put together a fairly ridiculous line up for their upcoming forum series called Carbon.Amassing a 'who's who' of the street and counter culture from locally and abroad, there has undoubtedly never been a series to parallel this within the country.Start out with Futura, this guy owns graf. Bobby Hundreds from LA, Noah Callahan Beaver, current editor of Complex Magazine and a host more internationals.Locally Tristan Ceddia, the King of the Serps and current trendsetter at Ksubi pairs up with Jimmy Bliggs of Grand Scheme and local darlings Beci Orpin and Alex Weiland head the domestic team.A series of four forums entitled BEYOND THE BRAND, BUILDING A T SHIRT LABEL, CRAFTSMANSHIP AND IMAGINATION and THE ART OF HYPE cover some exciting niches that are doubtless going to be beneficial to a broad cross section of people from a host of industries or those looking for an excellent source of inspiration. There's also a host of side events on the bill including workshops and parties to get involved in. Junior X Penny Modra

The Junior events are something we're a massive fan of. For any of you out there trying to break into the creative space in any form or move on up or pimp your ideas, this fresh networking event is a critical melting pot. This week, Penny Modra, the lady responsible for creating the lifeblood of content that feeds the hipster calendar across the nation (more commonly known as the thousands and threethousand.com.au locally) is laying down some giant deep sea pearls of wisdom. You really shouldn't need any incentive to attend, but the ability to listen to someone who knows a great deal more than you at a pub while sinking pints is a far cry from the nightmares of a high school career night. This is a great relaxed environment and the perfect surrounds to make some contacts, motivate you towards your goal and have some cheekys on a school night. Tonight from 7 at The Workers ClubCorner Brunswick and Gertrude St MapDetails: Junior

Ketel One House – Pop Up Bar

Everyone is talking about Ketel One House Pop-Up bar at Guildford Lane Gallery. And simply finding the hidden location isn't enough to gain you entry. But never fear, we've got 10 Doubles to give away for Friday 2nd July from 6pm - 9pm, so you can go and check the hype, grab some free cocktails and get the low-down on what makes Ketel One Vodka the best thing to come out of Holland since.....clogs? If you want to hit the house all you have to do is email your name and age to ketelonersvp@splendidcomms.comInclude the Subject: Daily Melbourne - Ketel One House. There are 10 double passes to give away, but this will be your last chance before the house 'pops down' forever. *T&Cs ApplyWe hit some special events last week and got to speak to Bob Nolet, the current 'heir to the throne' and 11th generation distiller about the 'house' being in Melbourne. "We know from previous trips that Melbourne drinkers have more discerning palates, the bars and bartenders here are the best in the country and we think Melbourne is a great fit for the brand". So much so that Bob was on hand to personally take visitors to the house through a comparative tasting session three people at a time in a specially designed area. For a guy worth so much money, this dedication to teaching people about the quality of his product is genuine and special. And the attention pays off, with hundreds of people now learning the difference between good and bad vodka. While you're there marvel in the great pop-up vibe and craftsmanship that has gone into the house. With a tip of the hat to the craftsmanship that goes into creating Ketel One, the space has been put together by the creators of State of Design and featuring the great local talent of Ben Cobham, Geoffrey Nees, Tim McMonagle and more. The custom built space is impressive, so jump this chance to grab some free tickets! *Terms and Conditions: You must be at least 18 years or over to enter this competition.
