Mariachi El Bronx

The Bronx are well known for their Californian hardcore punk vibe. They're also well known for supporting themselves as Mariachi El Bronx. An alter ego that extends their listener base to pretty much everyone in the world. If you hate the sounds of Mariachi El Bronx, you hate life. They're touring for the BDO this year as Mariachi El Bronx and paying sideshows as both. In Melbourne, they'll be bringing their laidback Mexican vibes to Billboard on 30th January, with support by the Vasco Era. If you like your Bronx a little harder, check them a couple of days later at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl supported by Soundgarden. Enjoy the show if you're hitting BDO and spare a thought for those boys going hard on stage in full Mariachi outfits. WHAT Mariachi El Bronx WHEN Monday 30th January WHERE Billboard TIX Music Feed

Pie Jam

It's the saviour of the night crawler and the ideal snack for day walkers. There is nothing like seeing the shining beacon that is a Pie Face store and chowing down a smiley face to return your sensibility. And as for another loose simile relating to shining beacons, Pie Face presents Pie Jam. This time the light is shining upon unsigned musical talent. By giving unsigned talent the chance to perform in their stores, they're given solid exposure to a wide fan base in some central locations. And the best of the best will win a recording deal, then on to stardom and never forgetting the smell of the pies that started it all. From today you can catch some live talent throwing down inside one of the multitude of Pie Faces around the city. Show them some love, it can't be easy to just start throwing down in the middle of the city. And while you're there, you'll score free mini pies. Pie Jam In a Pie Face near you

Kubik Melbourne

There is a lot of activity surrounding Melbourne Music Week, set to launch this Friday. By far the most visually stunning is set to be the installation of KUBIK at Birrarung Marr. Having travelled throughout Europe for the last couple of years, this architectural installation features a structure built primarily from poly water tanks. The tanks are filled with lights that pulse and change colour in time with the music. Some of Europe's hardest hallucinogenics combined with this light show surely set some of Berlin's finest club goers to another dimension in recent times. The line up inside the venue can be seen here. The opening party features massive sets by Cut Copy and Midnight Juggernauts with support from Worlds End Press. There is an eclectic line up across the festival, with something for everyone to experience this revolutionary space. During the day, South Melbourne patisserie Chez Dre will be hosting a cafe. Dolling out coffee and some premium macaroons in a perfect setting down at the Marr. KUBIK Melbourne Details: Melbourne Music Week

Guinness Live Thursdays

As if St.Patrick’s Day wasn’t enough of a marathon in itself, requiring at least a yearto get over, there is a new day on the Irish (and therefore International)calendar in which we must give thanks for drinking Guinness, by drinkingGuinness. Makes sense, more sense than ‘celebrating’ St. Patricks day anyway. The day inquestion is in fact Arthur’s Day. The day in which old Arthur Guinness signed a9000 year lease on the St. James gate brewery in Dub-Town (Dublin). Aspart of these celebrations, Guinness has decided to share the love with aninternational music contest that will culminate in an all outfestival in Dublin. Supporting local music talent, Guinness Live Thursdays havebeen separating the men from the boys and we’re now down to the semi-finals.Head downto PJ O’Briens in Southbank to watch Between the Wars take ona yet to be announced wildcard as voted by Guinness AustraliaFacebook fans. Winners will be decided by judges and fan votes, with the 4best bands heading to Sydney to compete at The Gaelic Theatre. Thewinner of the final, heads to to Dublin to represent Australia at the Arthur’sDay celebrations. You can get involvedthrough the Facebook page, follow and vote for the bands and help some awesomelocal talent earn a spot on stage in Dublin and quite obviously an education inhow real (Irish) men drink Guinness.Guinness Live ThursdaysSemi-Finals@ PJ O’Briens Southbank3 Southgate Ave, SouthbankThursday 8th SeptemberDetails: Facebook

Tickets are still available for the Marion Bay show and there is no better way we can think of to ring in the new year.Music Talents come in the form Alpine, The Kooks,  Arctic Monkeys, Crystal Castles, Lanie Lane, CSS, DJ Yoda, Kimbra, the list goes on, but in a good way, a really good way. Melbourne’s Cultural Fringe

Every Wednesday evening in Melbourne’s inner city suburbs, a group gathers to play the ukulele. Titled the Melbourne Ukulele Kollective, and outnumbered by beginners, the group is united through a passion for the instrument. Having performed at Federation Square and the Port Fairy Folk Festival, it might not be long ‘til you can claim you knew this group before they went commercial. If you’ve been watching the new TV program Fringe Lane, you’ll know what I’m on about. In only the show’s second week on air, Fringe Lane has featured segments on Melbourne’s Ukulele Kollective, St. Kilda’s Veg Out Community Garden, West Footscray’s Women’s Circus, and other quirky attributes of this city.Fringe Lane focuses on Melbourne’s art, fashion, food and music culture. Hosted by four young women, the show presents stories on emerging and undiscovered pastimes, enterprises and events that slip under the mainstream media radar. ‘We just felt there was no room on Australian television for something a bit different, a little left-of-centre, so this is our way of trying to change that’, says Fringe Lane Producer, Tahlia Azaria. Better yet, Fringe Lane is associated with Yourthworx Productions, enabling at-risk minors to get involved in the show’s production. Watch Fringe Lane, and you’ll be supporting Melbourne youths gain skills in editing, and operating cameras, audio and lights for the program.
